Opt Outside

A screen-free summer is upon us!

There are countless benefits of opting outside and choosing outdoor activities that benefit children’s mental and physical health. Nature and outdoor activities have a calming effect, reducing cortisol levels (stress hormone) in children. Ideally, outdoor time is spent away from technology and it involves some form of physical activity. The break from screens as well as body movement creates a natural separation from stressors and an increase in endorphins (mood elevator).

Being outside helps kids to unwind without the confines or demands that come at home, school, or other structured extracurricular activities. Unstructured, free play in a natural environment can both promote a sense of relaxation and build self-confidence for new environments. Kids can also benefit from something as simple as relaxing with a good book in the sun. Exposure to sunlight increases production of serotonin, which can help prevent or alleviate feelings of depression. Wear sunscreen and protect your eyes!

Lastly, and a significant part of opting outdoors, playing in nature has been shown to enhance cognitive development by stimulating critical thinking and decision-making skills. Whether navigating playground obstacles or collaborating with peers in unstructured environments, children enhance their cognitive abilities and reduce phobias through exploration and discovery in nature. During outdoor moments, kids will also be able to practice communication, social interactions and risk-taking in the wild.

I encourage all families to explore their natural environments together, whether it be a picnic in a park or a bike ride through the neighborhood. Offering opportunities away from technology and in nature can enhance family relationships. A challenge I would offer to parents is to look for an hour of free time to get outdoors with your kids. Be intentional with the hour, put your phone on do not disturb and do not be disturbed, not even for cute photos. Have free play as parents - this could be a good book or podcast you’ve been wanting to finish - and allow your children to climb, crawl, dig and be free to explore our beautiful world. Come together at the end of the hour and talk about your outdoor experience, maybe even plan your next family adventure!
