Neurofeedback
Frequently
Asked
Questions

  1. What is neurofeedback?

    • Neurofeedback is a computer-assisted, non-invasive method of biofeedback that trains individuals to regulate their brain activity. Through real-time monitoring of brainwave patterns and communication to the brain, individuals learn to modify their patterns to improve mental, emotional, and physical health. Neurofeedback helps the brain to function optimally, to be more flexible and more stable by promoting positive brain activity such as relaxation, focus, and attention while discouraging the type of brain activity that can lead to dysfunction.

  2. How does neurofeedback work?

    • Neurofeedback uses sensors placed on the scalp to measure brainwave activity. The individual is given visual and/or auditory feedback while watching a video or playing a video game. This feedback helps the brain to learn and balance its activity to remove the dysregulated pattern and resume the video or game. This learning process in the brain is called neuroplasticity which is the brain's incredible capacity to change, often for good. The goal of neurofeedback is to learn to self-regulate brain activity to optimize cognitive functions, emotional regulation, and overall well-being.

  3. Who and what can neurofeedback help with?

    • Neurofeedback is suitable for adults of any age and children ages 3 and up. Children generally respond well to the training and sessions can be tailored to be engaging and age-appropriate.

    • Neurofeedback has been used to help with a variety of conditions and symptoms, such as:

      • ADHD

      • Anxiety, panic attacks, stress

      • Sleep disorders (insomnia, etc.)

      • Depression

      • PTSD

      • Migraines

      • Substance Abuse

      • Chronic pain (fibromyalgia, etc.)

      • Learning disorders

      • Bedwetting

      • TBI, concussions

      • Autism/Asperger's

      • Parkinson's

      • Memory Loss

      • Dementia

    • Neurofeedback doesn't reverse chronic degenerative neurological conditions, however, there are common improvements in function with slower decline.

  4. Is neurofeedback safe?

    • Yes, it is a non-invasive, non-drug based therapy that is considered safe and effective when conducted by trained professionals. There are no known significant side effects, though some individuals may experience mild fatigue or headaches after a session which usually resolves quickly.

  5. What are the benefits of neurofeedback?

    • Neurofeedback can help improve cognitive functions like focus, memory, and mental clarity. It's sometimes used for athletes, students, and professionals to enhance performance and optimize brain health.

    • Neurofeedback can help individuals with learning disabilities including dyslexia and difficulties with attention. By training the brain to operate more efficiently, neurofeedback can improve focus, attention, and overall learning abilities.

    • Neurofeedback has been shown to help people manage symptoms of PTSD by stabilizing the brain's stress response and promoting emotional regulation. By retraining brainwave patterns, neurofeedback can improve resilience and emotional balance.

    • Other benefits include regulated sleep patterns, reduced pain, improved mood, changing unwanted habits and patterns into healthier behaviors, and more.

  6. How long does a neurofeedback session last?

    • A typical session lasts about 30-45 minutes. The length can vary depending on the specific treatment protocol and individual needs.

  7. How many sessions will I need?

    • The number of sessions recommended varies depending on the individual and the condition or symptom being addressed. Many people notice improvements after 10-20 sessions, while others may require more.

    • Some factors that may affect the number of sessions needed include taking certain medications, diet/nutrition, metabolic health, and lifestyle.

    • Each brain is unique so it is difficult to know to what degree symptoms will improve for any one individual. According to over 40 years of research, there is a 75-80% success rate. Certain conditions and symptoms may respond quicker than others.

  8. What does a neurofeedback session feel like?

    • During the session, electrodes are placed on the scalp to monitor brainwave activity. Most individuals find the process painless and comfortable, often fostering a sense of ease. You may hear or see feedback, but there is no physical sensation coming from the neurofeedback system. Some feel more relaxed after a session, while others feel more alert or focused.

  9. Can neurofeedback be used in conjunction with other therapies or medications?

    • Neurofeedback is often used alongside other therapeutic approaches including counseling, medication, and more. It is important to discuss your full treatment plan with your healthcare providers to ensure that all therapies are complementary.

    • It is recommended that you continue to take your prescribed medications as normal when you begin neurofeedback. After an initial period of training, you might become more sensitive to the side effects of medication and it may be possible to reduce a medication dose. You will need to discuss this with your prescribing medical professional and make that decision together.

    • Use of substances such as alcohol, marijuana, and more might slow down progress.

  10. Are there side effects of neurofeedback?

    • The process is generally well-tolerated. Some people might experience mild side effects such as temporary headaches, fatigue or tiredness, irritability or mood swings. These effects are usually temporary and subside after a few sessions.

  11. How does neurofeedback compare to other treatments?

    • Being a non-invasive and drug-free option, many individuals find that neurofeedback offers long-lasting benefits while being a low-cost option when calculated over time. When the brain functions more optimally it positively affects your life, cultivating better well-being leading to potentially less need for doctors visits, medications, tutors, and more. Your well-being and quality of life is the best investment.

  12. Is neurofeedback covered by insurance?

    • The Peaceful Place, LLC does not participate with any insurance companies for neurofeedback services. However, if your policy covers this type of therapy, you may be able to receive full or partial reimbursement directly from your insurance carrier. Ask your neurofeedback technician for more information if you need further guidance.

  13. How do I prepare for a neurofeedback?

    • Before you begin training sessions, a brain map will be acquired through a QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) reading. This technique records electrical activity of the brain which helps your provider to identify areas of the brain that are over- or under-stimulated and can guide the neurofeedback protocol for individual treatment. The brain map takes about 30-45 minutes. Following the brain map, you will meet with a licensed clinician to discuss the findings of your brain map and tailor your treatment plan alongside a discussion around goals and expectations.

    • Avoid consuming stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, and other substances prior to your sessions as they may interfere with the process.

    • For the brain mapping session, you will need to come in with clean hair with no products and will likely need to wash your hair afterwards due to the use of gel for the mapping process. It is also recommended that you avoid alcohol and other substances including OTC medication for 2-3 days prior to the map. Take your prescribed medications as normal. It is also recommended that you get a good night's rest the night before and eating a low sugar, high protein meal the morning of the map. This information and more will be sent to you when you book your brain map appointment with a trained professional.
